Have you ever met a parent who thinks anything less than 100% is a disaster?
Well, Commander Kuma has.
In this episode of Bear With Me, we're introducing the Stripes family. They're loving parents who want the absolute best for their son, Timmy. Unfortunately, their definition of success might be a little different from everyone else's.
Timmy recently received a 98% on his test. An A+, which most people would probably celebrate.
Not Mrs. Stripes.
She's concerned about the missing two percent and wants answers. Naturally, this means scheduling an urgent meeting with Commander Kuma to figure out what went wrong.
And things only get more ridiculous from there.
Before long, the family is discussing additional tutoring, extra practice tests, weekend study sessions, and an entire improvement plan for a child who's already doing exceptionally well.
Meanwhile, poor Timmy just wants a little time to play.
When Does Encouragement Become Too Much Pressure?
I wanted to have a little fun with something I've seen discussed quite a bit in education: the pressure we sometimes place on children to be perfect.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with having high expectations. Parents should encourage their children to work hard, develop good habits, and take their education seriously.
But I also think there's a difference between encouraging a child to succeed and making them feel like anything less than perfection is failure.
A 98% is an excellent grade. Missing a question doesn't mean a student needs an academic intervention plan.
Sometimes it just means they missed a question.
And while tutoring, extracurricular activities, and additional learning opportunities can certainly help students grow, children also need time to relax, make friends, and enjoy being kids.
A Little Perspective Goes a Long Way
One thing I enjoy about creating Bear With Me is being able to exaggerate situations that many teachers, parents, and students might recognize.
Mrs. Stripes isn't necessarily a bad parent. She clearly cares about Timmy's future. She just gets a little carried away trying to make sure he succeeds.
And Commander Kuma, as usual, is left trying to bring everyone back to reality.
His response pretty much sums up the situation:
"Ma'am, your son earned an A+. We're not investigating a crime scene."
Sometimes we could all use that reminder.
Anyway, I hope this episode gives you a laugh. I'm looking forward to exploring more of the Stripes family in future comics, especially Timmy's attempts to survive his parents' increasingly ambitious plans.
What do you think? Are parents putting too much academic pressure on children these days, or are high expectations necessary to prepare them for the future?
