Other beliefs become connected to politics, religion, parenting, education, professional philosophy, health choices, morality, or membership in a social group. Changing those beliefs can carry a much higher emotional or social cost.

Belief Perseverance Can Continue After the Evidence Changes

Experimental research has found that people can continue showing biased judgments after misinformation is retracted, although interventions such as counter-explanations, awareness training, and corrective information can reduce that effect.

Once people build an explanation for why something happened, the mind does not always rebuild that explanation automatically when one piece of evidence disappears. The original story may continue providing a framework for understanding the event.
