Education in the United States is often associated with local school districts and state departments of education. However, several federal agencies also play an important role in supporting students, educators, schools, and communities across the country.

While federal agencies typically do not determine what is taught in classrooms, they help provide funding, establish national priorities, conduct research, and administer programs that benefit millions of learners each year.

Supporting Students Across the Nation

The U.S. Department of Education oversees a wide range of programs designed to expand educational opportunity.

These include federal student financial aid, support for students with disabilities through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Title I funding for schools serving high concentrations of students from low-income families, and research that helps guide educational improvement.

The department also works with states to ensure that federal education laws are implemented effectively while leaving many day-to-day educational decisions to state and local leaders.

Education Beyond Traditional Public Schools

Federal education reaches far beyond neighborhood school districts.

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) serves military-connected students around the world, operating schools on military installations in the United States and overseas. DoDEA is widely recognized for its strong academic performance and commitment to supporting military families through consistent, high-quality education.

The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) supports the educational needs of many Native American and Alaska Native students through schools operated directly by the federal government or through tribal partnerships. These schools work to provide quality education while preserving and celebrating Indigenous cultures and languages.

Investing in America's Future

Education is one of the nation's most important long-term investments.

Federal agencies contribute by supporting teacher development, expanding educational research, improving access to technology, increasing opportunities for underserved communities, and helping schools prepare students for college and future careers.

Although each agency has a unique mission, they all share a common goal: helping students succeed.

Looking Ahead

Education continues to evolve as technology advances, workforce needs change, and new learning opportunities emerge.

Federal agencies will continue working alongside states, school districts, tribal governments, military communities, and higher education institutions to strengthen educational opportunities for learners across the country.

Whether supporting a child attending a DoDEA school overseas, a student applying for federal financial aid, or a Native American student attending a BIE school, federal education programs quietly touch the lives of millions of Americans every day.

Understanding their role helps us better appreciate the many partnerships that contribute to a stronger education system.
