We Have Made It Too Easy for Students to Avoid Difficult Work

Schools should support students without removing every consequence, deadline, challenge, or productive struggle. Retakes, late-work policies, AI shortcuts, grade recovery, and constant second chances can help students but they can also make it easier to avoid the hard work learning requires.

The argument here is not that students should receive fewer supports or that every missed deadline deserves a punitive response. The concern is that support can become counterproductive when it routinely removes the effort, persistence, accountability, and productive struggle that learning requires.

We Have Confused Support With Removing Difficulty

Schools should give students second chances.

A child should not have an academic future destroyed because of one bad week, one failed test, a family emergency, an illness, or one immature decision.

But somewhere along the way, many schools have moved from providing reasonable second chances to trying to remove almost every uncomfortable consequence from learning.

Assignments can sometimes be submitted weeks late. Tests can be retaken repeatedly. Missing work may receive minimum grades instead of zeros. Credit-recovery systems can replace months of coursework with abbreviated online modules. Students can use digital tools to summarize the reading, generate an outline, explain the mathematics, rewrite the paragraph, or sometimes produce the answer itself.

None of those practices is automatically bad.

The problem is what happens when the system sends students the message that difficult work is optional because another route around it will always appear.

Learning is supposed to involve struggle. Not humiliation, not unnecessary frustration, and not work designed merely to make students miserable, but the productive difficulty that comes from trying something you cannot yet do easily.

If schools eliminate too much of that struggle, we may also eliminate the opportunity to develop persistence.

Students Need Support, but They Also Need Friction

There is a difference between an obstacle and productive friction.

An obstacle prevents a student from learning. A disability that is not accommodated, a language barrier without support, hunger, unsafe transportation, bullying, or a poorly designed assignment can all interfere with learning in ways that deserve intervention.

Productive friction is different. It is the mental effort required to solve a problem, revise weak writing, read a difficult passage twice, memorize information that actually needs to be remembered, recover after getting an answer wrong, or keep working after the first strategy fails.

Research supported by the Institute of Education Sciences has emphasized the role of productive struggle in student motivation and learning, including helping students generate their own problem-solving strategies rather than immediately rescuing them from difficulty.

That does not mean teachers should simply make work harder.

Difficulty without purpose is just bad teaching.

But appropriately challenging work gives students a chance to discover that confusion is temporary, effort can change performance, and the first wrong answer is not the end of the task.

Those are academic lessons, but they are also life skills.

Retakes Can Help Learning—Until They Remove Preparation

Retakes are a good example of a policy that can be either educationally valuable or counterproductive depending on how it is designed.

There is a strong argument for allowing a student to demonstrate learning after additional practice. If a student fails a mathematics test, studies the concepts again, attends tutoring, corrects mistakes, and later demonstrates mastery, the new grade may actually provide a more accurate picture of what the student knows.

That makes sense.

But a retake system can produce a very different behavior if students know they can take the first assessment with little preparation and simply try again later.

The first test becomes a preview.

The deadline becomes flexible.

Preparation becomes optional.

The second chance no longer rewards additional learning because it has become part of the normal strategy for avoiding preparation the first time.

The solution is not eliminating retakes. It is connecting them to meaningful recovery work.

A student who wants another attempt might first complete corrections, attend tutoring, demonstrate practice, or explain what went wrong. The second opportunity should represent additional learning, not simply another roll of the dice.

Late-Work Policies Need an Ending

Flexibility around deadlines is also reasonable.

Students get sick. Families experience emergencies. Technology fails. Students with disabilities may require extended time. Teenagers sometimes make poor choices and deserve an opportunity to recover.

But deadlines have educational value too.

They teach planning, prioritization, communication, and responsibility. Those skills matter in college, employment, military service, apprenticeships, and adult life.

When every deadline becomes endlessly negotiable, the deadline eventually stops meaning anything.

Teachers then face a predictable problem near the end of a grading period: piles of missing assignments suddenly arrive from students who ignored the work for weeks but now need enough points to pass.

The educator is expected to grade everything immediately while still planning instruction, teaching current content, communicating with families, and completing end-of-term responsibilities.

That is not necessarily compassion.

Sometimes it simply transfers the consequence of student procrastination onto the teacher.

Good late-work policies should provide flexibility while still having clear limits. Students should know when work is due, what happens if it is late, what exceptions exist, and when the opportunity finally closes.

Second chances need boundaries or they stop functioning as second chances.

Minimum Grades Can Hide How Much Learning Is Missing

Minimum-grade policies are among the most controversial examples of this tension.

Some schools prevent teachers from entering grades below 50, even when a student submits little or no work. Supporters argue that the traditional 100-point scale makes a zero mathematically devastating and can make recovery nearly impossible after one failed assignment.

That argument deserves serious consideration.

A grading system should measure learning, not create mathematical traps.

But minimum grades create their own problem when families or students interpret the number as evidence that substantial learning occurred.

A 50 can look halfway toward mastery even when the student did almost nothing.

That is where grading philosophy and communication collide.

Schools should be willing to reconsider whether the traditional percentage scale makes sense. Standards-based grading, reassessment, and alternative grading systems may sometimes communicate achievement more accurately.

But whatever system a school chooses, the grade should tell the truth about what the student knows and has demonstrated.

A system designed to preserve hope should not accidentally conceal the size of the academic gap.

AI Has Created the Ultimate Shortcut

Artificial intelligence makes this discussion more urgent because students now have access to something previous generations did not: a tool capable of performing substantial portions of academic work almost instantly.

AI can explain a difficult idea, provide feedback, generate practice questions, translate text, help students brainstorm, and offer valuable tutoring support.

It can also summarize the chapter a student did not read, solve the mathematics problem they did not attempt, generate the discussion response they did not think through, and produce the essay they did not write.

The difference is not really about the technology.

It is about who is doing the intellectual work.

A student who asks AI for another explanation of a concept and then solves the problem independently may be using technology productively. A student who copies the generated solution has avoided the very thinking the assignment was designed to develop.

That is why schools need to stop asking only whether AI is allowed and start asking a more important question:

What part of this task must the student still do?

If the answer is “almost none of it,” we should not be surprised when students become less comfortable with difficult independent work.

Credit Recovery Should Recover Learning, Not Just Credits

Credit recovery was created for a legitimate reason.

Students who fail a course need pathways to graduation. A teenager who struggled in ninth-grade algebra should not necessarily be forced to repeat an entire school year or permanently lose access to graduation because of one course.

But credit recovery becomes questionable when recovering the credit becomes dramatically easier than earning it originally.

If one student spends a semester attending class, completing assignments, participating in instruction, taking assessments, and working through difficult concepts while another can fail that course and later complete a drastically abbreviated online program, schools risk creating two different standards for the same credit.

That does not mean credit-recovery programs are inherently weak. High-quality programs can provide targeted instruction, tutoring, mastery checks, and structured opportunities to relearn content.

The important word should be recovery.

Students should recover the learning, not simply the transcript notation.

Attendance Is Another Form of Academic Effort

The national absenteeism problem makes the issue even more complicated.

The U.S. Department of Education reports that chronic absenteeism remains widespread, with 20 states reporting in 2022–23 that more than 30% of students missed at least three weeks of school. Federal resources continue to emphasize the connection between attendance, engagement, and academic success.

Schools should absolutely address the real reasons students miss class. Transportation, health, family responsibilities, housing instability, bullying, anxiety, and disengagement all require more thoughtful responses than punishment alone.

But attendance still matters.

A student who repeatedly misses instruction is losing access to the work required to build skill. A worksheet posted online is not always equivalent to the explanation, discussion, feedback, guided practice, and interaction that occurred in the classroom.

Schools should remove barriers to attendance while also communicating that showing up is part of learning.

We should be careful not to turn flexibility into the idea that presence itself is optional.

We Have Become Afraid of Letting Students Fail Small

One reason schools may increasingly remove consequences is understandable: adults do not want children to fail.

Teachers do not enjoy giving low grades. Parents do not want their children discouraged. Administrators do not want failure rates rising. Students certainly do not want setbacks.

But small failures can be useful when students have a realistic opportunity to recover from them.

Forgetting to study and receiving a poor quiz grade can teach preparation.

Waiting until the night before a project and producing weak work can teach planning.

Submitting an unclear essay and being required to revise it can teach persistence.

Those experiences are not necessarily harmful. They become harmful when the failure feels permanent, humiliating, arbitrary, or impossible to recover from.

The goal should therefore not be eliminating failure.

It should be making failure recoverable and instructive.

Students need to learn that mistakes have consequences and that consequences can be repaired through additional effort.

That is very different from ensuring the consequence never arrives.

Teachers Are Often Pressured to Keep Everyone Passing

This conversation also affects teacher working conditions.

When large numbers of students are failing, pressure often moves toward the teacher.

Did you contact the parent?

Did you provide another opportunity?

Did you offer tutoring?

Did you allow late work?

Did you modify the assignment?

Did you call again?

Did you create a recovery plan?

Those questions can be appropriate. Teachers should communicate and provide reasonable support.

But eventually schools have to acknowledge that learning requires participation from the student too.

An educator cannot complete the assignment for the student, attend school on the student’s behalf, force someone to read at home, or make a teenager care about an assessment.

Accountability cannot flow in only one direction.

Teachers should be responsible for strong instruction, useful feedback, appropriate intervention, and fair opportunities to demonstrate learning. Students should also be responsible for showing up, attempting the work, responding to feedback, and using the opportunities they are given.

A healthy education system expects something from everyone.

Rigor Does Not Mean Giving Students More Work

Whenever someone argues that schools have become too easy, the response can quickly become “give students harder assignments.”

That is not the argument I am making.

Rigor is not assigning 50 mathematics problems instead of 20.

It is not reading a more difficult book simply because the vocabulary is harder.

It is not assigning hours of homework to prove a class is serious.

Real academic rigor means students are expected to think.

They explain why an answer is correct. They support an argument with evidence. They revise weak work. They transfer knowledge to unfamiliar situations. They solve problems without being given every step in advance.

A rigorous classroom can also be supportive, collaborative, engaging, and humane.

In fact, productive struggle works best when students believe the teacher will support them through difficulty rather than abandon them inside it.

Challenge and support are partners, not opposites.

New To Education Perspective: Help Students Through the Work, Not Around It

The best educational support helps students do difficult work they could not yet do independently.

It should not routinely remove the difficult work.

That distinction needs to become much clearer in schools.

If a student struggles with a text, provide vocabulary support, background knowledge, guided reading, or a more accessible entry point. But eventually the student still needs to read.

If a student struggles with an equation, model the process, provide practice, use tutoring, and give feedback. Eventually the student still needs to solve the equation.

If a student writes a weak essay, provide a conference, examples, a rubric, and another opportunity. Eventually the student still needs to write.

Support should be a bridge toward independence.

When support becomes a permanent detour around the skill, we may improve the grade without improving the student.

That tradeoff is not worth making.

What I Would Change

Schools should keep second chances but attach them to additional learning.

Retakes should require evidence of preparation. Late work should have reasonable but real deadlines. Credit recovery should demonstrate mastery rather than completion. AI policies should clearly define which parts of an assignment must remain the student’s own intellectual work.

Grading systems should communicate learning honestly while avoiding mathematical structures that make recovery impossible.

Schools should also intervene earlier when students disengage. A child with five missing assignments should not become a student with 40 missing assignments before adults respond.

Attendance, tutoring, academic intervention, and family communication should work together.

Most importantly, educators should be allowed to expect students to try.

Not every uncomfortable moment requires removal.

Not every low grade is harmful.

Not every difficult assignment needs an easier substitute.

Sometimes the appropriate support is helping a student remain in the struggle long enough to discover that they can actually do the work.

College courses have deadlines. Employers expect work to be completed. Apprenticeships require practice. Relationships require communication. Financial decisions require judgment. Adult life routinely presents problems without answer keys.

Schools should absolutely be places where students are supported through mistakes.

But support should prepare students to handle difficulty, not convince them difficulty can always be avoided.

We do children no favor by building an academic environment where every deadline moves, every consequence disappears, every failed attempt can be ignored, and every difficult task has a shortcut.

Students are more capable than that.

The standard should not be perfection.

It should be effort, growth, responsibility, and eventually independence.

The job of education is not to clear every obstacle from the road.

It is to help students become strong enough to keep moving when the road gets difficult.
