After more than 30 years of helping young people become more confident learners, I’ve learned one thing above all: knowing how to learn is more important than what you learn. That’s why my individual online sessions go beyond the usual tutoring model. I don’t just reteach material from school. Instead, I help teens take control of their learning process — by developing metacognitive skills they’ll use for life.
Metacognition? What is it? It’s a big word, but it simply means “thinking about your thinking.” It’s about becoming aware of how you learn best, spotting when something isn’t working, and knowing how to adjust. The students I work with don’t just get better at English — they become better learners as the skills I teach transfer to other subjects: math, science, social studies.
This isn’t theoretical. It’s backed by neuroscience. I trained in this approach more than two decades ago with Dr Roy Paget, who believed that true learning happens when we close the gap between teaching and thinking. That means focusing less on what the adult plans to teach — and more on how the student will experience, engage with, and remember what they’re learning.
That’s exactly what we do in our online sessions. In a session, you – the teenager - (or your teen, if you’re a parent reading this post) might be met with a strange question like: “Are you human? How can you be sure?” Before we’ve even started the topic, the thinking has begun. Everyone’s engaged. Everyone’s curious. And because we’re starting with questions — not answers — the learning sticks.
We use strategies that build the brain, quite literally. Research going back to the 20th century shows that novel, engaging experiences lead to more glial cells in the brain — the kind that support creative, connected thinking. In other words, when students are actively involved, their brain develops differently. Stronger. Smarter.
I’ve seen it firsthand in my classes over decades. Students who thought they “just weren’t good at school” start taking ownership of their learning. They stop memorizing and start reasoning. They speak up. They reflect. They grow.
So whether your goal is to boost academic performance, build confidence, or just help learning feel less frustrating — our sessions are designed around your brain, your pace, your interests. We follow the school curriculum if this is what you need at the moment, but with methods that make it come alive.
Most of all, we focus on turning unconscious learning into conscious learning — so you’re not just hoping the knowledge sticks, but actually making sure it does.
If you're curious about how one-on-one online sessions can unlock your learning potential, I’d love to hear from you. No gimmicks. Just powerful, science-backed strategies that work — because they’re built around how your brain learns best.
So learn online with Mrs. M. You’ll soon reap benefits. And that’s a promise I will keep!
