Fortune 500 companies are changing how they hire as artificial intelligence, skills-based recruiting, and automation reshape the workforce. What should schools, colleges, students, and families learn from the shift?

Hiring practices vary significantly by company, occupation, industry, location, and experience level. A shift toward skills-based evaluation does not mean college degrees have become irrelevant, nor does growing demand for artificial-intelligence skills mean every student needs to pursue a technology career. The larger issue is how education can prepare students for a labor market in which employers increasingly expect a combination of knowledge, practical skills, adaptability, and human judgment.

America’s Biggest Companies Are Sending Schools a Message

The companies at the top of corporate America do not all sell the same products or hire the same workers. Amazon, Walmart, UnitedHealth Group, Apple, Alphabet, CVS Health, Berkshire Hathaway, McKesson, ExxonMobil, Cencora, and Microsoft span retail, healthcare, technology, energy, logistics, insurance, and other industries.

What they share is scale. The 2026 Fortune 500 represents approximately $21 trillion in combined revenue and $2.1 trillion in profits, making the companies on the list an important indicator of where large employers are investing and how work is evolving. Amazon holds the No. 1 position in this year’s ranking, followed by Walmart.

For educators, students, and families, however, the most important question is not which company occupies which position. It is what these companies, and employers more broadly, are beginning to expect from the people they hire.

Artificial intelligence is changing jobs. Skills-based hiring is becoming more common. Employers are placing greater value on demonstrated capabilities and experience, while communication, analytical thinking, adaptability, judgment, and other distinctly human abilities remain important. That creates a challenge for education because schools cannot prepare students only for the jobs that existed when today’s curriculum was designed.

They have to prepare students for what comes next.

Skills-Based Hiring Is Becoming Harder to Ignore

For generations, the path into many professional jobs was relatively predictable: earn a degree, build a résumé, apply for a position, and use educational credentials as one of the primary signals that you were prepared.

Degrees still matter, particularly in careers where specialized education or professional licensing is required. However, employers are increasingly looking beyond the name of a degree and asking a more practical question: what can this person actually do?

The National Association of Colleges and Employers reported in January that 70% of employers participating in its Job Outlook 2026 survey said they were using skills-based hiring. NACE also found a disconnect between employers adopting the practice and students’ understanding of how to demonstrate their skills effectively.

The trend is visible among students as well. NACE reported in August that college students who understand skills-based hiring are increasingly highlighting employer-valued competencies on their résumés.

That does not mean education is becoming unimportant. In many ways, it means students increasingly need to leave school able to demonstrate what their education taught them to do. A transcript can show that a student completed a course, while an employer may also want evidence that the student can solve problems, communicate clearly, analyze information, collaborate, manage projects, use technology, and apply knowledge in unfamiliar situations.

Schools therefore have to think beyond completion and focus more intentionally on capability.

A Degree and Skills Are Not Opposites

One of the easiest mistakes in discussions about skills-based hiring is turning the issue into a false choice between college and practical skills.

The evidence is more complicated. A 2026 workforce analysis from Western Governors University covering 3,147 employers found that employers continue to value degrees while also expanding the range of signals they use to judge whether someone is ready for work, including hands-on experience and shorter-term credentials.

That distinction matters for students. A bachelor’s degree in engineering, nursing, accounting, education, computer science, or another field may remain highly valuable, but students can strengthen that education by adding internships, projects, certifications, portfolios, apprenticeships, research experience, leadership experience, or other evidence of practical competence.

The strongest preparation may therefore be less about choosing between education and experience and more about connecting them. Ideally, a student should be able to say not only, “I studied this,” but also, “Here is what I learned to do with it.”

AI Is Becoming a Workplace Skill, Not Just a Technology Topic

Artificial intelligence is accelerating this change because AI is no longer limited to software engineers and technology companies. Workers in business, marketing, finance, healthcare, logistics, government, design, education, research, customer service, and many other fields are increasingly encountering AI-supported systems.

Recent experimental research involving 1,700 recruiters in the United States and United Kingdom found that candidates presented with AI skills received higher interview-invitation probabilities across three occupations studied: software engineering, office assistance, and graphic design. The size of the effect varied by occupation, which is an important reminder that AI skills do not carry equal value everywhere.

Major employers are also investing in workforce training because they cannot simply recruit their way through every technological change. For students, the implication is significant: knowing how to open an AI application and type a prompt will probably not be enough.

Students will increasingly need to know how to use AI responsibly, decide when it is appropriate, recognize weak output, verify information, protect sensitive data, and combine machine assistance with their own expertise. That is a much deeper form of preparation than simply giving students access to new software.

Human Skills May Become More Valuable as AI Gets Better

There is an irony in the rise of artificial intelligence. The more capable machines become at producing information, the more valuable the ability to evaluate that information may become.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report identified analytical thinking as the most important core skill among surveyed employers, with resilience, flexibility, agility, leadership, social influence, and creative thinking also ranking highly. The report draws on more than 1,000 employers representing over 14 million workers worldwide.

This should matter to schools because those capabilities are not confined to a computer science classroom. Students develop analytical thinking when they evaluate competing explanations in science, interpret primary sources in history, defend a mathematical solution, distinguish evidence from opinion, or analyze an author’s argument.

They develop communication when they write clearly, present ideas, participate in discussion, and learn how to listen. They develop collaboration when they work through disagreement with other people rather than dividing an assignment into isolated pieces, and they build adaptability when they encounter a problem that does not look exactly like the example their teacher demonstrated.

These are traditional educational experiences, but they are also increasingly important forms of workforce preparation.

The Danger of Teaching Students to Outsource Their Thinking

AI creates another challenge for schools because the same tool that can accelerate learning can also make it easier to avoid learning.

A student can use AI to receive another explanation of a difficult concept, test ideas, practice a language, organize information, or receive feedback. The same student can also ask AI to write an essay, complete an assignment, solve a problem, or produce an answer without understanding the work.

From an employer’s perspective, those two patterns of AI use are very different. Companies do not simply need employees who can produce polished text with a chatbot; they need people capable of deciding whether that text is accurate, useful, ethical, appropriate, and aligned with the organization’s goals.

Schools that respond to AI only by banning it may fail to teach an increasingly relevant workplace skill. Schools that allow students to outsource too much thinking may create the opposite problem: graduates who know how to generate answers but struggle to evaluate them.

The educational challenge is to teach students how to work with powerful tools without becoming dependent on them.

Colleges Are Already Responding

Higher education is beginning to adapt more visibly. Associated Press reported this month that universities are seeing interest in AI coursework extend well beyond traditional computer-science students. Institutions are adding AI minors, interdisciplinary programs, and introductory coursework for students in fields such as biology, psychology, music, and other disciplines.

Purdue University has gone even further. Beginning with students entering in 2026, Purdue is introducing an AI working-competency graduation requirement for undergraduates. Its broader AI strategy includes learning about AI, learning with AI, research, institutional use, and industry partnerships.

That is important because it treats AI literacy less like a niche technical specialization and more like a general competency students may need across professions. A future nurse may use AI differently from an engineer, while a teacher may use it differently from an accountant or laboratory researcher.

The goal should not necessarily be turning every student into a programmer. It should be making sure graduates understand how emerging technology affects their own field.

Career Readiness Cannot Begin in College

Universities are only part of the answer. If students first begin thinking seriously about workplace skills during their senior year of college, education has waited too long.

Career readiness can begin much earlier without turning elementary or secondary schools into corporate training centers. A middle-school science project can teach teamwork, research, planning, communication, and problem solving. A high-school history class can teach students to evaluate evidence and identify unreliable claims. Career and technical education can connect classroom instruction directly to applied skills, while student organizations, summer jobs, volunteering, and community projects can help build leadership and responsibility.

Career preparation is broader than learning how to write a résumé. It is the gradual development of the capabilities students will eventually need to function independently.

That is why the Fortune 500 conversation matters for K–12 education too.

Employers Still Want Experience

The entry-level labor market also presents a familiar problem: employers often value experience from applicants who have only recently completed school.

NACE’s 2026 Job Outlook says employers continue to place value on hands-on experience, internships, and career-readiness skills as recruiting becomes more cautious and skills-based evaluation expands.

Schools and colleges can help close that gap by creating more opportunities for students to apply what they learn before graduation. Internships are one option, but they are not the only one. Apprenticeships, job shadowing, dual-enrollment programs, industry projects, school-based enterprises, research, volunteering, entrepreneurship, competitions, and community partnerships can all help students connect academic knowledge with real responsibilities.

The important part is authenticity. Students need opportunities where their decisions have consequences, where problems do not always have a single answer, and where communication with another person matters. That type of experience is difficult to reproduce through worksheets alone.

Schools Should Not Chase Every Corporate Trend

There is also a risk in looking too closely at employers.

Education has responsibilities that extend far beyond preparing people for Fortune 500 companies. Schools help students become informed citizens, understand history and science, communicate, develop creativity, build relationships, appreciate culture, pursue personal interests, and participate in their communities.

A student’s value is not determined by whether a corporation wants to hire them, and today’s most fashionable business skill may not remain fashionable for long. Schools would make a mistake if they redesigned curriculum every time a new corporate tool became popular.

The better approach is to distinguish between temporary technologies and durable capabilities. Specific AI platforms will change, but analytical thinking will remain valuable. Software interfaces will change, but communication will remain valuable. Individual programming languages may rise and fall, but the ability to learn something new will remain valuable.

That is the balance education needs.

Career Education Needs to Become More Honest

Students are often asked what they want to become long before they understand how rapidly occupations can change.

A student might choose a career based on the job as it exists today, while AI, automation, demographic change, regulation, globalization, or new technology reshapes that profession before the student reaches the middle of their career.

The World Economic Forum estimates that major structural changes could create 170 million jobs globally while displacing 92 million by 2030, for a net gain of 78 million positions. Those figures are projections rather than guarantees, but they illustrate the scale of workforce restructuring employers expect.

Career education therefore cannot simply provide students with a list of occupations and ask them to select one. Students need to understand industries, transferable skills, changing technology, pathways into different professions, and how to continue learning when their work changes.

The future may belong less to people who prepare for one permanent job and more to people who become capable of adapting repeatedly.

What Students Should Be Building Now

For students, the lesson from changing employer expectations is not that everyone should abandon traditional education and collect as many certificates as possible. It is to become more intentional about connecting learning with evidence.

A student studying business might learn how AI is changing analysis while also developing presentation and quantitative skills. A future teacher can learn educational technology while continuing to build classroom management, communication, instructional knowledge, and human judgment. A student interested in healthcare can develop digital literacy without losing sight of science, empathy, ethics, and patient interaction.

Students should also seek opportunities to produce things they can explain. A project, portfolio, internship, research paper, presentation, competition, certification, or leadership experience becomes more valuable when the student can describe the problem, their role, the decisions they made, what went wrong, and what they learned.

That demonstrates something a credential alone cannot always show.

What Schools Should Be Teaching

If employer expectations are changing, schools do not necessarily need dozens of new standalone courses. Many of the skills employers value can be strengthened through existing subjects when those subjects are taught deliberately.

English classes can emphasize communication, evidence, and argument. Mathematics can strengthen quantitative reasoning and problem solving. Science can teach experimentation and evidence evaluation. Social studies can strengthen source analysis and civic understanding. Career and technical education can connect those academic skills to real industries.

AI literacy can increasingly become part of that framework as well. Students should understand how AI works at an appropriate level, how to identify its limitations, how to verify generated information, and when automated assistance becomes inappropriate.

Most importantly, they should continue learning how to think without it.

Teachers Need Support Too

It is unreasonable to expect schools to prepare students for rapidly changing workplaces while leaving teachers to figure out those changes independently.

Professional development often focuses on how to operate a new platform rather than why a technology matters, where it belongs instructionally, or how it connects with changing workforce expectations. Teachers do not need to become experts in every Fortune 500 industry, but they do need access to current information, partnerships, professional learning, and examples that help them connect classroom instruction with the world students are entering.

Industry partnerships can help, but they should complement rather than dictate education. Employers can provide useful context about how work is changing, while educators remain responsible for determining how those lessons fit into sound teaching and learning.

Those perspectives can strengthen one another when the relationship is balanced.

The Bigger Question Is Whether Education Can Adapt Fast Enough

Large companies can change direction quickly when competitive pressure demands it. Education systems generally move more slowly, often for legitimate reasons. Curriculum changes require review, teachers need training, new technology needs evaluation, families deserve transparency, and schools serve children rather than shareholders.

Still, moving carefully cannot become the same thing as standing still.

AI adoption, skills-based hiring, new credentials, automation, and changing occupations are progressing regardless of how quickly school systems respond. Schools therefore face a difficult balance: avoid chasing every trend while also refusing to prepare students for a labor market that no longer exists.

That balance is likely to become one of the defining education challenges of the next decade.

A New To Education Perspective

The most important lesson from the Fortune 500 is not that schools should become more corporate. Education has a broader purpose than preparing students for large employers.

What the changing labor market does reveal is that education and employment cannot operate as completely separate worlds. Companies are increasingly asking employees to combine technical capability with judgment, communication, adaptability, problem solving, and continuous learning. Those abilities should sound familiar to educators because good education has always developed many of them.

What has changed is the environment in which students will use those skills. A graduate may now work alongside AI systems, move through several careers, earn credentials at different stages of life, and repeatedly learn technologies that did not exist when they entered school.

Preparing students for that world requires both traditional educational foundations and modern workforce awareness. Schools do not need to predict every future job; they need to help students become capable of learning whatever comes next.

Fortune 500 companies may be changing what they look for in workers. Schools do not need to copy those companies, but they do need to make sure students are prepared for the world those companies are helping shape.
