Why 5G Became a Health Scare

That distinction matters. Scientists are not claiming that every possible question about 5G has been permanently answered. They are saying that the evidence currently available has not established that ordinary exposure causes harmful health effects.
The same general conclusion applies to base stations. WHO says health effects are not expected from the low-level radiofrequency exposure produced by wireless networks and base stations under normal public conditions.
Other radiation-protection agencies reach similar conclusions. Australia’s ARPANSA states that current research does not establish adverse health effects from low-level radiofrequency exposure from mobile-phone base stations operating within safety standards.
This does not mean that telecommunications workers can ignore safety around high-powered equipment. Occupational exposure directly in front of active antennas can be very different from the exposure experienced by someone living nearby.
Does 5G Cause Cancer?
Cancer is one of the most serious claims associated with 5G, and it deserves careful wording.
In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans, or Group 2B. That classification was based largely on limited evidence involving wireless-phone use and certain brain tumors.
It was not a finding that 5G towers cause cancer. 5G had not yet been widely deployed.
The phrase “possibly carcinogenic” is also easy to misunderstand. IARC’s system evaluates whether an exposure could potentially cause cancer under some circumstances; it does not directly measure how large the risk is at a particular real-world exposure level.
Research has continued since 2011. A large prospective cohort study reported by IARC in 2024 found no increased risk of brain tumors among people with the greatest cumulative mobile-phone call time compared with lighter users in the population studied.
The FDA states that the weight of scientific evidence has not linked radiofrequency radiation from cell phones with health problems. CDC uses somewhat more cautious language, noting that research continues and some long-term questions remain under study.
